The oxygen (O2) sensor sits in the exhaust stream and constantly reports how much unburned oxygen is leaving the engine, which the computer uses to fine-tune the air-fuel mixture in real time. A worn sensor doesn't usually fail all at once — it drifts out of spec first, quietly costing you fuel economy for weeks or months before it throws a code or takes something more expensive down with it.
Signs your oxygen sensor is failing
- Noticeably worse fuel economy — a lazy or inaccurate sensor feeds the computer bad data, so it defaults to a richer-than-needed fuel mixture. A drop of several miles per gallon with no other explanation is a common early sign.
- Check engine light with a P0130–P0167-range code — this range of codes covers O2 sensor circuit and performance faults specifically, which a code reader will show even before you notice any driving symptoms.
- Rough idle or hesitation on acceleration — a sensor reporting a mixture that's too rich or too lean can make the engine stumble, especially from a stop.
- A rotten-egg (sulfur) smell from the exhaust — a sustained rich mixture overwhelms the catalytic converter's ability to process it, producing a distinct sulfur smell that's easy to mistake for something else.
- Failed emissions test — an out-of-spec sensor is one of the most common reasons a car fails an emissions/smog check, since it directly affects how cleanly the engine burns fuel.

- Single sensor, easy-access location (e.g., upstream sensor on a four-cylinder engine) — typically $150–350 for parts and labor at an independent shop.
- Downstream or hard-to-reach sensors — on some V6/V8 layouts or sensors mounted underneath the car, expect $250–450 due to the extra labor time.
- Multiple sensors at once — most vehicles have two to four O2 sensors (upstream and downstream on each bank), and shops often recommend replacing sensors of similar age together rather than one at a time, which can run $400–900 total.
- Dealer pricing — generally 20–40% higher than an independent shop for the same sensor and labor, mostly from higher hourly rates and dealer-only part pricing.
- Aftermarket vs. OEM sensors — a quality aftermarket sensor typically costs less than an OEM part with no meaningful difference in longevity; ask what brand a shop is quoting before assuming a lower price means a lower-quality job.

Is it really the O2 sensor?
