A whining or groaning noise that shows up when you turn the wheel — especially sharp turns at low speed, like pulling into a parking spot — is one of the more recognizable sounds a car makes. On older cars with hydraulic power steering, it usually points to the power steering pump, and it's a repair that tends to get worse gradually rather than fail all at once.
A quick note on which cars actually have a "pump"
This applies to hydraulic power steering — a belt-driven pump that pressurizes fluid to help turn the wheels. Most cars built roughly since the mid-2000s to 2010s, and nearly all new cars today, instead use electric power steering (EPS): an electric motor on the steering column or rack, with no pump, hoses, or fluid at all. If your car is newer and the steering suddenly feels heavy, that's a different problem — an EPS motor, sensor, or electrical fault, which usually announces itself with a dashboard warning light rather than noise or a fluid leak. Signs your power steering pump is failing
- A whining, groaning, or squealing noise when you turn the wheel — usually loudest at low speed or when revving the engine while stationary. This is typically the first symptom people notice.
- Stiff or heavy steering, most noticeable during slow, tight maneuvers like parking, and easing up somewhat at higher speeds.
- Reddish or reddish-brown fluid pooling under the front of the car — power steering fluid has a distinct color that's easy to tell apart from engine oil or coolant.
- Low, foamy, or discolored fluid in the power steering reservoir, a sign the fluid has aerated or broken down.
- A squeal right at startup, which often means the fluid is low or the drive belt is slipping.
- A burning smell or smoke from under the hood — a later-stage sign the pump is overheating.
- Total loss of steering assist in the worst case — the wheel becomes very heavy to turn, though the car is still mechanically steerable.
Why it happens
- Worn internal seals or bearings from age and mileage — as the pump wears, it works harder, which accelerates leaks and hastens failure.
- Contaminated fluid — dirt, moisture, or metal particles wear down seals and internal surfaces over time, and old fluid breaks down from heat cycling.
- Low fluid, usually from an existing leak — running the pump low causes it to cavitate, which can destroy it quickly.
- A worn, glazed, or slipping serpentine belt — since the pump is belt-driven, a bad belt starves it of the speed and pressure it needs.
- Loose mounting brackets, which can misalign the pulley and put extra stress on the pump.
Is it safe to keep driving?
Not for long. The car is still technically steerable — power steering assists, it doesn't replace manual steering — but the extra effort shows up exactly when you need quick reactions, like parking or a tight corner. There's also a real cost to waiting: a failing pump can circulate metal shavings through the fluid lines and into the steering rack, turning what should be a few-hundred-dollar pump repair into a much pricier rack replacement. Get it looked at promptly rather than living with the noise.

- Dealership or chain: commonly $500–1,100+ for the same job — often OEM-only parts plus a fluid service, at a higher labor rate.
- Trucks, SUVs, and some European models can run higher, since a few layouts make the pump more labor-intensive to access.
- A simple fluid leak (a worn hose or fitting, rather than the pump itself) is usually the cheapest fix, often $150–350.
- A failed rack-and-pinion — the expensive end of the spectrum if a leak or failing pump was ignored long enough to contaminate the rack — typically runs $800–2,000+, plus a required wheel alignment afterward.
Independent shop or dealer for a power steering pump?
This is a strong candidate for an independent shop. The pump is a bolt-on, commodity part — quality remanufactured and aftermarket units are widely stocked, so an independent shop isn't limited to pricier dealer-only sourcing. Diagnosis is also straightforward: an experienced technician can usually confirm a pump problem from the noise pattern, fluid color, and a visual leak check, without needing dealer-specific diagnostic equipment. The main reason to go to a dealer instead is if the car is still under warranty.
