Sticking brake caliper: signs and repair cost

Brake pads get all the attention, but the part that squeezes them is just as likely to be what's actually wrong. A caliper that clamps down and then doesn't fully let go drags the pad against the rotor every mile you drive — burning fuel, cooking the brake, and quietly ruining a set of pads and a rotor that were fine a month ago. The good news is that a sticking caliper announces itself in ways you can check yourself in about five minutes.

Signs a brake caliper is sticking

  • The car pulls to one side when you brake — and sometimes when you're not braking at all. A caliper that stays partly clamped puts more drag on one wheel, so the car wanders toward that side.
  • One wheel is much hotter than the others — the single most useful check. After a short drive, hold your hand near (not on) each wheel. A brake that isn't releasing radiates real heat while the others are barely warm.
  • A sharp burning smell after driving — hot brake pad material has a distinct acrid, chemical smell, different from burning oil or hot rubber. It's strongest near the wheel that's dragging.
  • Grinding, scraping, or a constant hiss from one wheel — the pad is riding the rotor all the time, so the noise doesn't come and go with braking the way a worn-pad squeal does.
  • Pads worn out on one corner only — if one wheel's pads are down to nothing while the other side still has half its life, something is holding that caliper closed.
  • Noticeably worse fuel economy — you're effectively driving with the brake lightly applied. A few miles per gallon can disappear without any other symptom you'd notice.
  • The car feels sluggish or "held back" — especially rolling in neutral or coasting downhill, where a dragging brake is easier to feel.

Why calipers stick

  • Seized slide pins. On the floating calipers used by most cars, the caliper slides on two greased pins. When the grease dries out and the pins corrode, the caliper can't move back off the rotor. This is the most common cause by a wide margin — and often the cheapest to fix.
  • A stuck caliper piston. Moisture and road salt get past a torn dust boot, the piston bore corrodes, and the piston no longer retracts. This one usually means the caliper gets replaced.
  • A collapsed brake hose. The rubber hose to that wheel can fail internally and act like a one-way valve: fluid gets to the caliper, but can't flow back. The caliper looks fine and is fine — the hose is the fault.
  • Old, contaminated brake fluid. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, which corrodes pistons and bores from the inside. Skipping fluid flushes is how a lot of caliper problems start.
  • Rust or debris behind the pads. Corrosion built up on the bracket where the pads sit can pinch them so they can't slide back, which mimics a seized caliper exactly.

What the repair should cost

  • Cleaning and re-greasing seized slide pins — often $100–250 per wheel, and it's the first thing a good technician checks. If the pins are the whole problem, you don't need a caliper.
  • Replacing one caliper — commonly $300–800 per wheel including parts and labor. Remanufactured calipers cost meaningfully less than new and are a normal, sound choice for a daily driver.
  • Doing the pair on one axle — roughly $500–1,200. Shops often recommend both sides so braking force stays even, though replacing a single failed caliper is defensible when the other side checks out clean.
  • A brake hose instead — usually $150–350 per hose, including the bleed. Much cheaper than a caliper, which is exactly why the diagnosis matters.
  • Brake fluid flush — typically $90–180, and almost always part of the job, because opening the system means bleeding it anyway.
  • Add pads and a rotor for that corner — a dragging brake usually destroys both, so budget another $250–500 on top for that wheel.
  • Electronic parking-brake calipers — the rear calipers on many newer cars have a built-in motor and need a scan tool to retract. Expect the rear corners to run higher than the front, sometimes $700–1,200 each.

Get the diagnosis before you buy the part

"Sticking caliper" is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Slide pins, the piston, the hose, and the pad hardware all produce the same hot wheel and the same burning smell, and they're separated by hundreds of dollars. A technician can tell them apart in well under an hour — pull the wheel, check whether the caliper slides freely, crack the bleeder and see whether trapped pressure releases (that's the hose test), and inspect the piston boot. Anyone quoting you a caliper over the phone from a description hasn't done that yet.

Should you keep driving it?

Not far. A dragging brake gets hot enough to boil the fluid in that corner, and boiled fluid means a soft pedal and much longer stopping distances right when you need them. It can also glaze the pad, warp the rotor, and in the worst case cook the wheel bearing or set fire to a grease-soaked dust shield. If one wheel is hot and smelling after a short drive, treat it as a same-week repair — and if the car is pulling hard under braking, get it looked at before your next long trip rather than after.
