Engine misfire: P0300 codes and repair costs

A misfire is the one fault where the car tells you almost everything you need to know before a technician touches it — if you know how to read it. The difference between a $150 coil and a $3,000 head gasket is written into the code, the light, and how the engine behaves when it's cold. It's also the fault where waiting the longest costs the most, because a bad enough misfire destroys the catalytic converter on the way past.

This is the diagnostic post that ties together several of the parts we've covered separately. A misfire isn't a part — it's a symptom with about eight plausible causes, and the whole job is narrowing them down cheaply.

What a misfire actually is

Each cylinder fires once every two crankshaft revolutions. For that to work it needs three things at the same moment: spark, fuel, and compression. Take away any one of them and the cylinder contributes nothing to that rotation — a misfire.

The engine computer doesn't measure combustion directly. It watches the crankshaft speed sensor and looks for the tiny deceleration that happens when an expected power stroke doesn't arrive. Count enough of those in a rolling window and it sets a code. That's why the codes are so precise about which cylinder: the computer knows exactly where in the firing order the missing push was.

What it feels like

  • A rough or shaking idle — most noticeable at a stop light, sometimes bad enough to feel like the car is trying to stall.
  • Stumbling or hesitation on acceleration, especially under load — pulling away from a stop, or climbing a hill.
  • A loss of power, sometimes with the car dropping into limp mode.
  • Worse fuel economy, because unburned fuel is going straight out of the exhaust.
  • A smell of raw fuel from the tailpipe, or popping/backfiring sounds.
  • A check engine light — steady, or flashing.

If the shaking is there at every speed and doesn't change when the engine is under load, look at wheels, tires and driveline before you look at ignition. A misfire vibration is engine-speed-related: it gets worse in gear, at idle, or under throttle — not at a particular road speed.

A flashing check engine light is a stop-driving light

This is the single most useful thing in this post, so it goes before the codes:

A steady check engine light means "get this looked at." A flashing check engine light means "a misfire is bad enough right now to be dumping raw fuel into your exhaust."

Unburned fuel ignites in the catalytic converter instead of in the cylinder. The converter's internal honeycomb can overheat and melt in minutes, not weeks — and a replacement converter is commonly $1,000–2,500, sometimes more on a V6 or V8 with two of them. That's the cheap-repair-becomes-expensive mechanism people mean when they say a misfire "cascades."

What to do if it's flashing: back off the accelerator until it stops flashing, and drive the shortest distance you can — ideally straight to a shop. If it keeps flashing at any throttle opening, that's a tow. A $120 tow against a $1,800 converter is not a close call.

Read the code first — it's free

Any auto parts store will read the code at no charge, and a $25 Bluetooth scanner does the same thing. Misfire codes come in two flavors and the difference changes the whole diagnosis:

  • P0301, P0302, P0303 … up to P0312 — a misfire on that specific cylinder. The last digit is the cylinder number. This is the good news code: it points at one cylinder's worth of parts, and the fix is usually cheap.
  • P0300 — random or multiple cylinder misfire. This is the harder code. It means the misfires are spread out rather than sitting on one cylinder, which points at something the whole engine shares: fuel supply, a vacuum leak, ignition timing, or bad fuel.

A very common and very readable pattern: P0300 together with P0303 means "there's a general misfire, but cylinder 3 is the worst of it." Start at cylinder 3.

Ask the shop to give you the codes in writing. A quote for parts without a stored code behind it is a quote worth a second opinion.

The causes, roughly in order of likelihood

Spark side (most common, cheapest)

  • Worn spark plugs. The default suspect, particularly past 60,000–100,000 miles or if nobody can tell you when they were last done. See spark plug signs and cost.
  • A failing ignition coil. The most common single-cylinder cause on modern coil-on-plug engines, and the classic "misfires when cold, clears up when warm" or "misfires under load" pattern. Details in ignition coil failure signs and cost.
  • Water in the spark plug wells, cracked plug boots, or damaged plug wires on older engines.

Fuel side

  • A clogged or leaking fuel injector — often one cylinder, often with a faint fuel smell. See fuel injector problems and costs.
  • A weak fuel pump or clogged filter — this one shows as P0300 rather than a single cylinder, and typically gets worse under load. See fuel pump failure signs and cost.
  • Bad or contaminated fuel, including water in the tank. Cheap to rule out, and worth mentioning if the misfire started within a tank of a fill-up.

Air and sensors

  • A vacuum leak — a split intake hose or a failed gasket lets in unmetered air. Usually P0300, usually worst at idle, often with a lean code (P0171/P0174) alongside it.
  • A failing mass air flow sensor — the computer fuels for the wrong amount of air. See MAF sensor failure signs and cost.

Mechanical (least common, most expensive)

How a good technician narrows it down

The diagnosis is a sequence, and each step is cheaper than the one after it:

  1. Read all the stored codes and freeze-frame data — engine temperature, RPM and load at the moment the code set. "It only misfires cold" is a different fault from "it only misfires at 3,000 RPM under load."
  2. Look at live misfire counts per cylinder on a scan tool. This shows which cylinder is worst even when the stored code says P0300.
  3. Swap the coil (and the plug) with a neighbouring cylinder and drive it again. If P0303 becomes P0304, the coil is the fault — proven, for the cost of ten minutes of labor and no parts at all. This test is the reason you should never let a shop replace all the coils on a single-cylinder code without asking.
  4. Test compression or do a leakdown test on the offending cylinder if the spark and fuel sides come back clean. This is the step that separates a $200 problem from a $3,000 one, and it's worth paying for before you approve any engine work.

What it costs

Diagnosis first: expect $80–200 for misfire diagnostic time at an independent shop — many will credit it against the repair if you go ahead. Add roughly $100–300 if it goes as far as a compression or leakdown test and scope work. Dealer diagnostic time typically starts higher, because the labor-rate gap applies here like anywhere else: independents commonly run $90–150/hour against $150–250/hour at a dealership.

Those are ranges for planning, not quotes — engine layout moves them a lot, and a technician who can see your car is the only source of a real number. The shape of the table is the point: the top half of that list covers most misfires, and the bottom half is what you're trying to avoid by not driving on a flashing light.

Questions worth asking before you approve the work

  • "Which cylinder, and which code?" A specific-cylinder code and a quote to replace every coil on the engine are two different jobs. Ask why.
  • "Did you swap the coil to confirm it?" On a single-cylinder ignition fault this test is nearly free and it's definitive. A shop that skipped it is guessing with your money.
  • "Was compression checked?" If the quote is for engine work — head gasket, valves, rings — the answer needs to be yes, with numbers.
  • "How long have the plugs been in?" If nobody knows and they're due anyway, doing plugs and coils together on a high-mileage engine is often sensible rather than upselling. Ask for the two prices separately so you can see which is which.
  • "Is the converter still good?" Worth asking if the car was driven on a flashing light. Better to know now than to fix the misfire and fail an emissions test a month later.

Independent shop or dealer?

Almost always an independent. Misfire diagnosis is standard work with standard tooling — a scan tool, a compression tester, and a technician who follows the sequence above. The parts (plugs, coils, injectors) are the same components a dealer would fit, frequently from the same manufacturer. What you're paying for is diagnostic patience, and that isn't a dealer-exclusive commodity.

The exception is a misfire with a known factory pattern for your specific engine — some models have technical service bulletins for exactly this — where a dealer's model-specific history is genuinely worth something. Ask any shop whether a TSB exists for your engine and symptom; a good independent will check and tell you.
