Bad VVT solenoid: P0011, P0014 and repair cost

Almost every engine built in the last twenty years can change when its valves open, on the fly, to suit what you're asking of it. The part that makes that happen is a small electrically-operated oil valve — the variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid, sometimes called an oil control valve or OCV — and when it stops doing its job the car doesn't break so much as get worse at everything at once.
It's also one of the more commonly mis-diagnosed parts on a car, because the codes it throws are not really "the solenoid is bad" codes. They're "the camshaft isn't where I told it to be" codes, and there is more than one reason that can happen.
What a failing VVT solenoid feels like
- A rough or unstable idle, sometimes with the engine hunting up and down or nearly stalling at a stop.
- A flat spot or hesitation on acceleration — the car pulls, but not the way it used to, particularly from low revs.
- Worse fuel economy with no change in how you drive.
- A ticking or rattling noise from the top of the engine, usually loudest in the first few seconds after a cold start.
- A check engine light, which is often the first real evidence. On some cars the engine also drops into a reduced-power limp mode.
None of those symptoms are exclusive to the VVT system — a rough idle is the single least specific complaint a car can have — which is why the codes matter more than the feel here.
The codes, and what they actually mean
The VVT codes come in pairs: one per camshaft, per bank. On a four-cylinder you'll usually only see the bank 1 codes; on a V6 or V8 you may see either bank.
- P0011 / P0021 — intake camshaft timing over-advanced or system performance, bank 1 and bank 2.
- P0014 / P0024 — exhaust camshaft timing over-advanced or system performance, bank 1 and bank 2.
- P0010 / P0013 / P0020 / P0023 — the circuit codes for the same solenoids. These point at the electrical side — wiring, connector, or the solenoid coil itself — rather than at oil flow.
The distinction between the two groups is worth understanding before anyone quotes you a part. A circuit code (P0010) is a genuinely electrical fault. A performance code (P0011) only says the camshaft didn't reach the position the computer commanded — and the solenoid is one of several things that could be responsible.
The pattern worth flagging: if a car sets P0011 and P0014 together — both camshafts on the same bank refusing to move — that points away from a single failed solenoid and toward something upstream that affects both: low oil pressure, or base timing that's already off because the timing chain has stretched. Two solenoids failing simultaneously is uncommon. One oil supply feeding both of them is not.
Why they fail
The solenoid is a small valve that meters engine oil to the camshaft phaser, and it has a fine mesh screen in front of it. That screen is usually the actual failure point:
- Dirty oil and sludge. This is far and away the most common cause. Skipped or stretched oil changes let deposits build up, and the solenoid's fine filter screen is one of the first things they clog. Once oil can't get through, the camshaft can't move, and you get a performance code from a solenoid that is electrically perfect.
- Low oil level. The VVT system runs on oil pressure. If the engine is down a quart or two, the phasers may not get enough pressure to respond, especially at idle when pressure is lowest.
- Electrical faults — a chafed wire, a corroded connector, or a failed coil inside the solenoid. This is what the circuit codes are pointing at.
- Age and cycling. The solenoid sits in a hot part of the engine and switches constantly. Seals harden and internals wear, typically somewhere past 100,000 miles.
Notice how much of that list is really an oil-maintenance story. A VVT code on a car with a long service history and clean oil is a different problem from a VVT code on a car that's 8,000 miles past due.
Can you keep driving?
Short-term, usually yes — the car will run, just poorly. But two things make this worth dealing with promptly rather than living with:
- A car running with mistimed valves runs rich or lean, and unburnt fuel going down the exhaust is how you damage a catalytic converter — a repair an order of magnitude more expensive than the one you're avoiding.
- If the underlying cause is oil starvation, whatever is starving the solenoid is starving the timing chain and its tensioner too. Sludge that clogs a solenoid screen doesn't stop there.
What should this cost?
Public repair-estimator averages put a variable valve timing solenoid replacement at roughly $471–598 all-in, split about $271–304 in parts and $200–294 in labor.
That average hides an enormous spread, though, and the spread is almost entirely about where the solenoid lives. Some sit on the front of the valve cover and come out in twenty minutes. Others are buried behind an intake manifold or a timing cover. Real per-vehicle estimates from the same source show the range plainly:
- Honda Accord — $218–352
- Honda CR-V — $245–373
- Honda Civic — $308–416
- Ford F-150 — $372–526
- Nissan Altima — $483–632
- Toyota Camry — $634–687
- Toyota Corolla — $1,152–1,232
Those are estimator averages across shop types, not quotes. As a rule of thumb for what to expect:
- Independent technician: commonly $250–500 for an accessible solenoid, parts and labor, on a mainstream 4-cylinder or V6.
- Dealership or chain: commonly $450–800 for the same job. The part is frequently the identical OE unit; the gap is the labor rate.
- Awkward locations, V6/V8 engines with four solenoids, or anything behind an intake manifold can push either number well past those ranges — this is where a four-figure quote can be legitimate rather than a rip-off.
Add $75–150 for diagnostic time at most shops, often credited against the repair if you go ahead with it.
How to not pay for the wrong part
This is a repair where a careful diagnosis is worth more than a cheap parts price. Before you approve anything:
- Ask what the oil level and condition looked like. On a performance code this is the first thing a good technician checks, and it's free. A solenoid fitted to an engine full of sludge will fail again.
- Ask whether the screen was inspected or the old solenoid cleaned and tested. A clogged screen sometimes cleans up; that's a legitimate outcome and a much smaller bill.
- If both an intake and an exhaust code are stored on the same bank, ask directly about oil pressure and timing chain stretch before agreeing to solenoids. Replacing two solenoids on a car with a stretched chain fixes nothing and you'll be back.
- Ask which specific solenoid, by bank and camshaft. "It needs VVT solenoids" — plural, unspecified — on a V6 with four of them is a quote worth questioning.
- Get the codes themselves in writing. Any shop can read them out; a shop that won't tell you which ones were stored is a shop to walk away from. See our guide on what the check engine light is actually telling you.
Independent shop or dealer?
Strongly an independent-shop job. VVT solenoids are standard parts available to any shop, often the same OE component the dealer would fit, and the diagnostic procedure is documented for every mainstream engine. The labor-rate gap between an independent and a dealership is the whole difference on a repair like this.
The one caveat: if the diagnosis points at a stretched timing chain rather than a solenoid, that's a much bigger job — get a second opinion and a written quote before committing either way.
