Car burning oil: causes and repair costs

There's no puddle on the driveway. Nothing on the cardboard under the engine. But the dipstick keeps coming back low, and you're topping it up every few weeks with a quart from the trunk.

That's oil being burned rather than leaked — it's going out the tailpipe instead of onto the ground. The frustrating part is how wide the price range is. The same symptom can be a $40 part or a $4,000 engine rebuild, and the difference is almost entirely in the diagnosis. Here's how to work out which one you're looking at before anyone starts quoting.

First: is it actually abnormal?

Every engine burns a little oil. The question is how much, and manufacturers are more permissive here than owners expect.

  • GM's published guideline for passenger cars and light trucks is 1 quart per 2,000 miles under normal driving.
  • Several other manufacturers accept up to 1 quart per 1,000 miles, and that figure shows up in Hyundai and Volkswagen service literature too.

So a dealer telling you "that's within spec" may be technically correct and still be describing a car that annoys you. Two things are worth holding onto:

  • Real-world cars use far less than the spec allows. A Consumer Reports study found more than 98% of vehicles never needed oil added between changes. If yours does, it's unusual even when it's "normal."
  • The spec is what the warranty claim gets measured against. If you're still in coverage and you think consumption is excessive, ask the dealer to run a documented oil consumption test — drain and refill to a measured level, seal the dipstick, drive a set distance (often 1,000 miles), and measure again. Nothing gets approved without that paper trail, and starting it early matters, because the test itself takes weeks.

Before that, rule out the boring stuff: check the level correctly (engine warm, car level, a few minutes after shutdown), and look hard for a slow leak. A weep from a valve cover gasket or the oil filter housing can vanish onto a hot exhaust without ever reaching the ground.

What the symptoms tell you

The pattern of the smoke narrows the cause faster than any part swap. Have someone watch the tailpipe while you drive off.

  • A puff of blue smoke on cold start-up that clears in a minute or two — classic worn valve stem seals. Oil seeps past the hardened seals and pools on top of the valves while the car sits overnight, then burns off in one go.
  • Blue smoke under acceleration, or continuously — points toward worn piston rings or cylinder wear. This is the expensive end.
  • Blue smoke on deceleration, coasting down a long hill, also leans toward ring or valve guide wear.
  • Smoke on a turbocharged engine, plus oil in the intake pipe — the turbo's shaft seals may be the source rather than the engine itself.
  • No visible smoke at all, but the level still drops — a PCV system fault is a strong candidate, and so is an oil leak you haven't found yet. Modern catalytic converters also do a good job of hiding light smoke.

Other supporting signs: a burnt-oil smell after a drive, spark plugs fouled with oily deposits (a shop can pull one and show you), and a low-oil-pressure light if the level has been allowed to fall too far.

The causes, cheapest first

PCV valve or PCV system. The crankcase ventilation system routes blow-by gases back into the intake. Stuck open, it pulls oil vapor straight into the combustion chamber; stuck closed, crankcase pressure builds and forces oil past gaskets and seals. It's the single most common cheap cause of oil consumption and it should be checked first, every time.

The wrong oil. An engine specced for 0W-20 filled with something thicker or thinner than the manufacturer calls for can consume more than it should. Worth confirming what actually went in at the last change.

Valve stem seals and guides. Rubber seals harden and crack with age and heat. Very common on higher-mileage engines, and the start-up-puff signature is distinctive.

Piston rings and cylinder wear. Rings lose their seal — sometimes through genuine wear, often because they're carbonised and stuck in their grooves from extended oil-change intervals or short-trip driving. This distinction matters financially: stuck rings sometimes respond to a proper engine flush or a chemical decarbonising treatment; worn ones don't.

Turbocharger seals on a turbo engine, and on some designs a failing PCV/oil separator that lets the turbo pull oil through.

A known design defect. Some engine families are simply famous for it — certain 2010s Subaru, Audi/VW, BMW, Toyota and GM engines had oil-consumption service campaigns, technical service bulletins, or class-action settlements. Search your exact engine and model year before you accept a rebuild quote; someone else may already have paid for the fix.

What should this cost?

Rough US ranges, parts and labor, for a mainstream car. Your engine's layout moves these numbers more than anything else — anything requiring cylinder-head removal scales with how buried the engine is.

  • Diagnosis, including a compression or leak-down test: commonly $100–200. This is the single best money you can spend here, because it's what separates a seal job from a ring job. Many shops credit it toward the repair.
  • PCV valve replacement: the part is often $10–50; installed, typically $50–200 depending on how accessible it is. On some engines it's a five-minute job; on others the whole assembly is part of the valve cover.
  • Oil change with the correct viscosity, plus a proper flush if stuck rings are suspected: $80–250.
  • Valve stem seals: widely quoted around $900–1,800 at a shop. The seals themselves are pocket change — it's a labor job, and on some engines it can be done with the head still on the car, which is a meaningful saving worth asking about.
  • Turbocharger replacement: commonly $1,000–2,500+ installed, depending on the engine.
  • Piston rings / engine rebuild: $2,000–5,000+, and on a larger or more complex engine, more. At this point compare it honestly against a used or remanufactured engine, which is sometimes cheaper than the rebuild and comes with a warranty.

Labor rate does a lot of the work in those ranges. Independent shops generally bill $90–150/hr against a dealer's $150–250+, and on a valve-seal job that's most of the bill.

Why you shouldn't just keep topping it up

Adding a quart now and then feels like the cheap option, and for a mild case on an older car it can genuinely be the right call. But there are two costs that build quietly:

  • Burnt oil kills catalytic converters. Oil ash coats the substrate and poisons it. A replacement converter is commonly $1,000–2,500+, so an ignored consumption problem can turn into a much larger bill that has nothing to do with the engine.
  • Running low is what actually destroys engines. Consumption itself is slow; a car that's a quart and a half down on a hot highway run is doing real bearing damage. If yours uses oil, check it every other fill-up and keep a quart in the trunk. That habit is non-negotiable.

Getting an honest quote

Ask three questions before you agree to anything:

  1. "What did the compression or leak-down test show?" A real answer names cylinders and numbers. "It's burning oil, they all do at this mileage" is not a diagnosis, and it's usually the preamble to the most expensive version of the repair.
  2. "Have you ruled out the PCV system and a leak?" Both are cheap, both are common, and both get skipped.
  3. "Is there a TSB or service campaign for this engine?" A shop that knows the platform will know. It can turn a five-figure conversation into a warranty claim.

For consumption work specifically, an independent technician is usually the better value — the diagnosis is the same everywhere, the labor rate is materially lower, and an independent is more likely to offer the middle-ground repairs (seals only, a decarbonising treatment, a used engine) rather than defaulting to the factory-blessed rebuild.

The one exception is the same as always: if you're still in the powertrain warranty, go to the dealer, and ask for the oil consumption test in writing.
