Bad engine mounts: signs and replacement cost

Your engine doesn't bolt straight to the car. It sits on three or four engine mounts — rubber-and-metal (sometimes fluid-filled) blocks that hold it in place while absorbing the vibration it makes and the torque it puts out under acceleration. They're a wear item nobody thinks about until one lets go, and then the whole car suddenly feels older than it is.
The good news: this is one of the cheaper repairs on a car that's shaking, and it's frequently misdiagnosed as something far more expensive. Worth knowing the signs before you accept a transmission or suspension quote.
Signs your engine mounts are worn
- A clunk when you shift between park, reverse, and drive — the clearest single sign. With a good mount, the engine barely moves as the transmission engages; with a worn one, it rocks and thumps against the subframe. You'll usually hear it from under the hood, not from under the car.
- Vibration at idle that smooths out once you're moving — worn mounts stop damping the engine's normal shake, so it comes straight through the steering wheel, seat, and floor. It's often worst sitting at a light in drive, and noticeably better in neutral or park.
- A lurch or jolt on hard acceleration — under load the engine twists against its mounts. When one is broken, it moves further than it should before catching, which you feel as a lurch or a thud the moment you get on the throttle.
- Rougher shifts or a delayed engagement into gear — on most cars the transmission is bolted to the engine and shares the same mounts. Let the whole assembly move too much and the driveline alignment goes with it, which can show up as harder or later-feeling shifts.
- Visible cracking, separated rubber, or oily residue on a mount — with the hood up, a bad mount often looks bad: rubber pulling away from its metal frame, chunks missing, or a wet, oily film. That last one matters — many modern mounts are hydraulic (fluid-filled) for extra damping, and once the rubber cracks the fluid leaks out and the mount stops damping anything.
- The engine visibly rocks when someone revs it — the classic shop check. With the parking brake on and the car in park, watch the engine while a helper blips the throttle. An inch or two of lift or rock is the tell.
Is it really the mounts?
Idle vibration has plenty of other causes — a misfiring cylinder from worn spark plugs or a failing ignition coil, an exhaust leak, or a vacuum leak — and shake at speed is usually wheels, tires, or suspension rather than mounts at all.
The pattern that points at mounts specifically is vibration that changes with gear selection and load, not with road speed. Bad at idle in drive, better in neutral, worse under acceleration, no worse at 65 mph than at 35 — that's a mount. Shake that appears at a particular speed and gets worse the faster you go is a wheel or driveline balance problem instead.
A technician confirms it in a few minutes with a visual check and a load test (watching engine movement while the car is held against the brake in drive and reverse). It's a cheap thing to verify, so ask them to show you which mount moved before agreeing to the work.
What replacement should cost
- A single mount at an independent shop — commonly $200–600, parts and labor. Part cost is modest; the spread comes almost entirely from how buried the mount is. A top mount you can reach from above is quick; a rear or lower mount that needs the engine supported from below and subframe hardware dropped is several hours of labor for the same $80 part.
- A full set (three or four mounts) — roughly $400–1,200 on most common vehicles. Because much of the labor overlaps, doing them together usually costs a lot less than three separate visits — worth asking about if the car has high miles and one has already failed.
- Dealer pricing — expect roughly 20–40% more than an independent shop for the same job. Labor rate is most of that gap: independents generally sit around $110–135/hour against $140–180/hour at a dealer, and this repair is labor-dominated.
- Ask whether every mount needs doing — a shop that recommends the full set on a car with one obviously collapsed mount may be right, or may be padding. Ask which specific mounts they inspected and what they found on each. A straight answer here tells you a lot about the shop.
Don't put it off indefinitely
A worn mount isn't an emergency the way a brake or cooling problem is, and plenty of people drive on one for a while. But an engine that's free to move takes it out on everything bolted to it: exhaust flex joints, coolant hoses, wiring harnesses, axle shafts, and the remaining mounts, which now carry load they weren't sized for. What starts as a $300 job can drag a few hundred dollars of collateral damage along with it if it's left long enough, and a fully broken mount that lets the engine contact the subframe or a driveshaft is genuinely worth fixing now rather than next month.
There's no scheduled replacement interval for mounts. Rubber ones often go well past 100,000 miles; hydraulic ones sometimes start leaking closer to 60,000. Age, heat, and oil exposure matter more than mileage alone — which is why an older car with modest miles can still need them.
